Antioxidants as anti-aging!

Do you know what aging is, like the actual processes in the body that causes it to age? Aging, put very simply, is cells dying.

Our daily actions and how we choose to live our lives greatly impact the speed of aging. Smoking, drinking, lack of sleep and a poor diet are all examples of lifestyle choices that will reduce cell renewal and speed up aging. On the other hand there are also lots of things you can do to slow down aging. Being active every day, staying away from heavy toxins and focusing on good nutrition are some examples, but there is one type of nutrient that is particularly good at slowing down the process of aging; antioxidants. Inside your body, an army of antioxidants is protecting you from the forces of aging and disease.

Antioxidants are nutrients that help prevent or stop cell damage caused by oxidants. (Get it? Antioxidants.) “Oxidants are free radicals that you find in the environment, but they're also produced naturally in your body,” says Diane McKay, Ph.D., an assistant professor and researcher at Tufts University’s Antioxidants Research Laboratory.

Your body creates them to help fend off viruses and microbes, but if you have too many, they can cause serious damage and contribute to certain cancers and heart disease. You also get hit with oxidants daily from things like air pollution, cigarette smoke, and alcohol, McKay says.

As their name implies, antioxidants stop the oxidative damage by replacing a molecule's kidnapped electron without damaging other molecules; this disarms free radicals and turns them back into law-abiding members of cellular society. Antioxidants are like a million microscopic soldiers on a mission to save your body from the inside out.

So where can you get these antioxidants? Well I have some good news for you.. One little power nutrient known as one of the strongest natural sources of antioxidants we know, is Chia Seeds! This is one of the many reasons why it´s one of my favourite foods to keep around, and why I chose to make it the focal point of the Chia Bar. Other foods abundant in antioxidants are blueberries (you´ve probably heard this before!), cacao and spices such as cinnamon.

All of our Chia Bars contain chia seeds, but each of the flavours also have their own little additional powerhouse of an antioxidant; blueberries in the Berry flavor, raw cacao in the Cacao flavor and cinnamon in the Apple Pie flavor. So next time you want quick access to some cell-renewing, anti-aging antioxidants, our bars might be just what you´re looking for :)

What do you do to reduce the process of aging?

Lots of love,

Anne
